Soliciting contributions for a book-length anthology tentatively titled Children, Youth, and the Sectional Conflict, to be published as part of the Children and Youth in America book series at New York University Press.
Essays will examine the unique experiences of American children of all ages, ethnicities, and regions as they relate to any aspect of the sectional conflict, including the political, social, and economic ramifications of antebellum sectionalism and slavery; the wartime home front and battlefront; and Reconstruction and the long-term legacies of the war. Whenever possible and appropriate, the points of view of children and/or youth should be presented. Although interdisciplinary approaches are welcomed and, indeed, encouraged, the essays must be framed with a historical sensibility. Final essays will run between 6500-8000 words, including notes.
Successful proposals will be for essays that, rather than just covering some aspect of children’s lives during this period, directly engage issues related to sectionalism, the Civil War, and its aftermath as they affected the lives of children and youth.
The deadline for proposals is June 30, 2008. Interested scholars should email their one-page proposals and C.V.s directly to James Marten, Professor of History at Marquette University, who is editor of both the series and the proposed anthology. Final versions of the essays chosen for the anthology will be due on January 31, 2009, with an estimated publication date of spring 2010.
